ASSINIBOINE INDIANS IN CANADA

ASSINIBOINE INDIANS ARE SPEAKERS OF A SIOUAN LANGUAGE OF THE PLAINS. SO DESPITE ITS SIMILARITY TO STONEY LANGUAGE THEY CAN'T UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER. ABOUT 200 PEOPLE IN MONTANA AND SASKATCHEWAN.

KELSEY MET ASSINIBOINE TRADING PARTIES FROM THE JAMES BAY PAST WEST ALONG THE CANOE ROUTE INTO PRESENT DAY SASKATCHEWAN. THEY INSURED THAT THE FUR PELTS WENT TO THE HUDSON BAY COMPANY IN TRADE FOR METAL UTENSILS, FIRE, ARMS, BEADS, CLOTH, TOBACCO, AND LIQUOR.

IN 1730'S OTHER TRADERS CONFIRMED THE LOCATION OF THE ASSINIBOINE THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN PRAIRIES. THEIR CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE WAS RECORDED BY THESE EARLY TRADERS. THEIR TRAILS BECAME MAJOR TRAIL ROUTES. THE ANGLOS VALUED THEM FURTHER AS THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO TRAP FUR BEARING ANIMALS. MY EXPERIENCE AS A FLORIST

I AM A SELF TAUGHT FLORIST AS I EXPERIMENTED WITH PUTTING WILD DRIED FLOWERS AND PODS TOGETHER IN AN ARRANGEMENT SINCE I WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I LIVED IN OHIO AND COLLECTED VARIOUS MILKWEEDS, THISTLES AND DIFFERENT NATURAL BRANCHES AND MADE FLORAL DISPLAYS FOR MY FAMILY'S HOME. THEN EVEN BEFORE I WAS MARRIED I PLAYED AROUND WITH SILK FLOWER DISPLAYS. I LOVED THE CREATIVITY OF MAKING VARIOUS DISPLAYS. I USED THESE SELF TAUGHT TALENTS TO BE A FLORIST IN SEVERAL SMALL SHOPS AS I WAS A MOM. IT WAS SO CREATIVE AND FUN. I STILL MADE MY ON WEDDING BOUGUET WITH SILK FLOWERS AND MADE THEM INTO A NEAT BASKET DISPLAY. THIS TALENT WAS ALSO USED AS I CREATED ANOTHER BUSINESS WITH MY INDOOR FOUNTAINS. I DESIGNED THESE CONTAINER FOUNTAINS WITH ROCKS AND SMALL WATER PLANTS AND ROCKS ARRANGED SO IT APPEARED TO BE A REAL WATERFALL. I DESIGNED SMALL PUMPKINS WITH DRIED FLOWERS FOR SALE AT A FARMER'S MARKET.

AFRICAN DANCING

LAST NIGHT I ATTENDED AN AFRICAN DANCE THAT HAD FOUR DRUMMERS AND ABOUT 20 DANCERS. I WAS NOT THE ONLY NEW ONE THERE. WE DANCED BARE FOOT AN SLID AROUND FOR ABOUT 1 1/2 HOURS STRAIGHT. WE WERE SWEATING. WE WERE SWEATING. WE FOLLOWED THE TEACHER WHO HAD MORE BAREFOOT DANCERS THAN I'VE SEEN BEFORE. WE STOMPED AND DID RYTHMIC DANCING FOR 2 HOURS AND WE SWEATED DOWN. THEY ANNOUNCED THAT THESE DANCES ARE TRADITIONAL. THEY KEPT US GOING STRONG. SOME OF THEIR DANCES HAD US SPINNING IN CIRCLES. WE GOT QUITE A WORKOUT. SOME OF THEIR DANCES WERE TO TRAIN US TO BE WARRIORS AND BE STRONG. OTHERS WERE JUST FOR FUN. WE DANCED LIKE AFRICANS IN A CIRCLE H CELEBRATING THE FULL MOON.

SPAGHETTI FEAST IN SANTA ROSA

LAST WEEKEND I ATTENDED THE ITALIAN FESTIVAL AT THE VETERANS BUILDING. IT WAS THE 21ST FESTA ITALIANA. I DID NOT CARE FOR THE FOOD -AS IT WAS WHITE NOODLES, WHITE BREAD AND THE SALAD WAS SOGGY. HOWEVER THE MUSIC AND DANCING WAS GREAT. THE SAME ITALIAN BAND I HAD HEARD IN RAILROAD SQUARE WAS THERE AND THE LEADER BEGAN TO ASK T5HE AUDIENCE TO DANCE. WE FORMED A CIRCLE AS WE DANCED WITH A COUPLE OF STEPS IN ONE DIRECTION AND SKIPPED A LITTLE AND DANCED AROUND THE CIRCLE. IN ANOTHER ROOM THERE WAS AN ACCORDIAN PLAYER WITH ANOTHER BAND WHERE THEY HAD BEAUTIFULLY DRESSED WOMEN DANCERS FROM SACRAMENTO. AND TOGETHER WITH THIS BAND THEY HAD A GROUP OF ROMAN ARMOR WARRIORS WITH STEEL RIBBED SHIRTS! IT WAS PRETTY STRANGE LOOKING AS THEY HAD MANY SWORDS AND ARMOR FROM THE ROMAN DAYS. FOR THE KIDS THEY MIGHT HAVE A FACE PAINTING WITH CLOWNS.

THEY HAD AN EXHIBIT OF THE ITALIAN STONE MASONS WHO WORKED HARD TO CHISEL THE BASALT FROM ANNADEL STATE PARK INTO BLOCKS FOR PAVING STREETS SUCH AS RAILROAD SQUARE, THE LA ROSE HOTEL, PETALUMA MAIN STREETS, AND SAN FRANCISCO. THEY ALSO HAD SOME OLD CARS AND SOME MADE IN ITALY TO LOOK AT. THESE ACTIVITIES WERE ORGANIZED BY THE NORTH BAY ITALIAN CULTURAL FOUNDATION. THEY DONATE FUNDS TO THE SANTA ROSA JUNIOR COLLEGE.

SOME ITALIANS HAD BOOTHS FOR SELLING JEWELRY, PHOTOGRAGHY, LINENS AND VARIOUS TEE SHIRTS.

TSILKOTIN INDIAN IN CANADA

THE TSILKOTINS ARE THE ATHAPASCAN TRIBES FROM B.C. THEY LIVE IN THE VALLEY OF CHILOCOTIN RIVER. THEIR RELATIVES ARE CARRIERS WHO LIVE ADJACENT TO THE ATHAPASCANS WHO ARE IN CONTACT WITH THEM. THEY TRADED WITH THE BELLACOOLA. THEY ARE COMMUNICATED WITH THE KWAIKIUTLS. THEY DO NOT KNOW THE SHUSWAP MUCH. IN EARLIER TIMES THESE TRIBES WERE AT WAR. THE SHUSWAP COMPETED THE SALISH TO MAKE PEACE AND PERMIT INTERMARRIAGE.

THE CENTER OF THE TSILKOTN TERRITORY WAS IN ANAHEM LAKE. THEY RANGED AS FAR SOUTH AS CHILCO LAKE WHERE THEY FISHED FOR SALMON. THEY MOVED IN LARGE GROUPS TO CHILCO LAKE WHERE THEY FISHED FOR SALMON. THEY MOVED IN LARGE GROUPS TO CHILCOTIN RIVER. AS SOON AS SOON AS THE SEASON WAS PAST THEY RETURNED TO THEIR HOMES.

MY ARCHAEOLOGICAL STUDIES AT ANDERSON MARSH STATE PARK

WHILE I WORKED FOR THE STATE PARKS IN THE EARLY 80'S I SUPERVISED THE EXCAVATION OF A TEST OF SEVERAL CUBIC YARDS AT A PREHISTORIC SITE DATING TO THE PLEISTOCENE. WE HAD A VOLUNTEER CREW OF ABOUT 20 FOLKS WHO SWEATED DURING THE COURSE OF A WEEKEND.

THE ARTIFACTS TOOK MONTHS TO CATALOGUE AND ANALYZE. I BROUGHT THEM INTO OUR LAB WHILE SOME OF THE STAFF TOOK OVER COUNTING VARIOUS FLAKES. I WENT TO SSU TO LEARN HOW TO IDENTIFY AND DIFFERENTIATE THE TYPES OF OBSIDIANS WE HAD UNEARTHED. WE BROUGHT SOME SAMPLES OF OBSIDIAN TO SSU FOR OBSIDIAN HYDRATION IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE AGE OF VARIOUS DEPOSITS.

MY REPORT TOOK OVER A MONTH TO ORGANIZE AND COMPLETE. I PRESENTED A PAPER ON THIS EXCAVATION TO OUR CALIFORNIA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SOCIETY AND DETERMINED THAT IT WAS A SITE USED FOR OVER 10,000 YEARS BY THE SOUTHEASTERN POMO PEOPLE. WE COLLECTED MANY FISH BONES, A WIDE VARIETY OF DEBITAGE, ONLY A FEW PROJECTILE POINTS, SEVERAL MANOS AND OTHER UNIDENTIFIABLE BASALT ROCKS. THE PARK WAS PLACING A VIEWING PLATFORM HERE FOR THE MARSH. THIS SITE HAD BEEN EXCAVATED MORE THOROUGHLY IN THE EARLY 70'S, SO I HAD A LOT OF COMPARATIVE DATA TO USE. THE SOUTHEASTERN POMO STILL USED THIS PARK FOR DANCING AND FOR EXHIBITS FOR THE PUBLIC. THE SITE IS LOCATED BY ONE OF THE LARGEST NATURAL LAKES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA.

SCHANTOGA INDIANS IN CANADA

THESE NATIVES ARE CALLED 'PEOPLE OF THE WOODS'. THEY ARE A DIVISION OF TEH ASINIBOIN WHICH DOBBS PLACED NORTHWEST OF LAKE WINNEPEG, CANADA. IN 1850'S THEY HAD ABOUT 58 LODGES IN SEVERAL BANDS. THEY TRAVELED OVER THE MOUNTAINS TO SASKATCHEWAN. IN 1741 THEY WERE PLACED NORTH WEST OF LAKE WINNEPEG. THEIR USUAL HABITAT WAS NOT FAR FROM SASKATCHEWAN RIVER. THEIR NEIGHBORS WERE THE ASSINIBOINE. THEY TRADED AT HUDSON BAY COMPANY POST ON THE ASSINIBOINE RIVER. IN 1862 THEY HAD A POPULATION OF 200 FOLKS. THEY BUILT 100 LODGES WITH 200 WARRIORS. THEIR TOTAL POPULATION WAS 880!. THEY NOW LIVE ON A RESERVE OF 70,000 ACRES. THEY ARE A VERY ENERGETIC TRIBE. THEY RAISED STOCK, SOLD TIMBER, FURS, AND BEADWORK WORKED AS RANCHMEN. IN 1873 A MISSION WAS BUILT THERE.

TLILNGCHADINNE INDIANS IN CANADA

THESE FOLKS ARE CALLED "DOG FLANK PEOPLE". THEY ARE ATHAPASCAN MEMBERS. THEY LIVE ON THE SEAL RIVER. THEY DID NOT TRADE WITH THE FRENCH, BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID OF THE HOSTILE MASKEGON. THEY LIVED INLAND EAST OF COPPERMINE RIVER. THEY LEFT THEIR HOMELAND SINCE THE CREE PUSHED THEM OUT.

THE TRIBE ORIGINATED FROM THE UNION OF A SUPERNATURAL DOG MAN WITH A TINNE WOMAN AFTER THE DISCOVERY OF COPPER. A TATSANOTTINE WOMAN LIVED WITH HER TWO BROTHERS. THE STORY GOES ON TO TELL THAT A HANDSOME MAN CAME BY THEIR DWELLING AND TOOK THE WOMAN FOR HIS WIFE. SHE AWOKE IN THE MIDDLE OF OF HER WEDDING NIGHT AND FOUND HER HUSBAND GONE, BUT HEARD AN ANIMAL CRUNCHING BONES. THE SAME THING HAPPENED THE NEXT NIGHT. THEY LIGHTED TORCHES BUT FOUND NO ANIMALS. THEY HURLED A STONE AXE INTO THE NOISE CORNER, THEN THEY HEARD A CRY OF AGONY AND FOUND A GREAT BLACK DOG TWITCHING IN THE DEATH THROWS. BECAUSE THE WOMAN HAD MARRIED A DOG-MAN SHE GAVE FORTH A LITTER OF PUPPIES AND SHE KEPT THEM IN A BAG. ONE DAY THE DOGS BECAME CHILDREN AS SOON AS THEY REACHED THE LIGHT.

TWO BOYS AND TWO GIRLS WERE KEPT IN DAYLIGHT WERE KEPT IN DAYLIGHT AND THEY BECAME THE PROGENITORS OF THE THLINGCHADINE. THEY PRIMARILY HAVE AN ADJOINING TRIBE- TATSANOTTINE- WHOSE LANDS EXTEND TO THE COPPERMINE RIVER. THEY PRIMARILY EAT REINDEER. THEY TREAT THEIR WOMEN AND DOGS WITH MORE KINDNESS. THE FATHER LOSES HIS NAME ON THE BIRTH OF A CHILD. OTHER TRIBES OF THIS GROUP HAVE THE SAME CUSTOM, BUT THESE PEOPLE CHANGE THE NAME AFTER THE BIRTH OF EVERY CHILD. IN 1900 THEIR POPULATION WAS ABOUT 1000.

ART QUEST SHOWQUEST

LAST NIGHT I WENT TO A SPECIAL PRESENTATION THAT WAS AT ART QUEST ADJACENT TO SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL. IT IS A PROGRAM THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS NEED TO APPLY TO. THEY HAD A NEAT VIDEO EXPLAINING WHO THESE YOUNG ADULTS ARE AND THE VARIETY OF PROGRAMS THAT THEY PARTICIPATE IN. I VISITED MOST OF THE PROGRAMS AND THEY HAD. EACH MODULE OR ROOM HAD THE TEACHER THERE TO EXPLAIN WHAT THE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS DID THIS YEAR. AFTER THE MAIN VIDEO THERE WAS A MUSICAL PRELUDE WITH ABOUT 20 SINGERS DRESSED IN JEANS AND TEE SHIRTS. THESE FOLKS WERE ENTHUSIASTICALLY SHARING THEIR TALENTS AND SINGING UNIQUE PITCHES TO THE SAME CONTEMPORARY SONG. NEXT THEY HAD ABOUT 20 KIDS SHOW THEIR UNIQUE FASHIONS AS THEY MODELED SOME SPECIAL COSTUMES. THERE WERE MANY PARENTS AND OTHER KIDS WHO WERE NOT IN ART QUEST. IT GAVE THEM SOMETHING TO DO.

THE FIRST PRESENTATION I ATTENDED WAS THE DANCE GROUP WHO WERE VERY LIMBER. THEY WERE DRESSED IN BLACK AND WHITE. THERE ARE MANY MORE GIRLS IN ART QUEST THAN BOYS FOR SOME REASON. THE DANCERS WERE A GREAT GROUP TO WATCH AS THEY DANCED SHORT DANCES TO VARIOUS THEMES. IT WAS SO HOT THERE THAT I HAD TO LEAVE.

I WENT TO THE THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES THAT WERE 7 MINUTES SKETCHES FROM SHAKESPEARE. SEVERAL OF THE ACTORS WERE VERY DRAMATIC. I ALSO WENT TO THE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT ROOM AND ONE YOUNG LADY EXPRESSED THAT SHE MADE SEVERAL PHOTOGRAPHS AND A JOURNAL THAT EXPLAINED WHY SHE WAS FOCUSING ON THE TIN MAN IN THE WIZARD OF OZ. I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND THE PHOTOS AS THEY WERE JUST OK OF VARIOUS FACES.

NEXT PLACE I VISITED WAS THE VISUAL FINE ARTS. THIS YOUNG TEACHER SHOWED US VARIOUS PHOTOS FROM A MULTIMEDIA PROJECTOR OF HER STUDENT'S ART. MOST OF IT WAS ABOUT MAKING PURSES OF VARIOUS MATERIALS. THEY ALSO TOOK ON ADDING ALL KINDS OF METAL AND GADGETS AS WELL AS PAINTING AN OLD CAR TO LOOK ARTSY. I HAVE SEEN BETTER ONES IN THE FAIRGROUNDS. IT WAS FUN TO JOIN THIS CROWD AND MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS AND THE HIGH SCHOOL KIDS.

TATSANOTTINE INDIANS IN CANADA

THESE INDIANS MEAN 'SCUM OF THE WATER' WHICH IS FIGURATIVELY AN EXPRESSION FOR COPPER. THEY ARE CHIPEWYAN WHO LIVE NEAR THE GREAT SLAVE LAKE, CANADA. THEY SPEAK ATHAPASKAN. IN 1789 AN ANGLO EXPLORER NOTED THAT THEY LIVE WITH OTHER TRIBES ON THE MACKENZIE PEACE RIVERS. THEY WERE MORE NOMADIC THAN THEIR NEIGHBORS. THEY HUNTED MUSKOXEN AND REINDEER. MANY OF THEIR MEN WERE KILLED BY TREACHERY WITH THE THLINGCHADINE. IN SOME HUNTING TRIPS THEY MET THE ESKIMO WHEN THEY WERE IN CONSTANT WAR. THESE FOLKS WERE HELD AND UNSCRUPULOUS WHO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THEIR NEIGHBORS.

IN 1836 THEY HAD BEEN POWERFUL AND NUMEROUS AND HAD BEEN REDUCED TO 70 FAMILIES. ONE FRENCH MAN FOUND THEM SERIOUS AND RELIGIOUSLY INCLINED LIKE THE CHIPEWYAN. THEY FORMERLY MANUFACTURED AND SOLD COPPER KNIVES, AXES, AND OTHER CUTTING TOOLS. THE METAL WAS FOOUND ON A LOW MOUNTAIN NEAR COPPERMINE RIVER BY TRADERS OF THE HUDSON BAY.

THE TATSANOTTINE HAVE A MYTH THAT ONE OF THEIR WOMEN WAS KIDNAPED AND CARRIED OFF TO THE ESKIMO IN ASIA AND MARRIED TO ONE OF THEIR MEN. SHE MADE HER ESCAPE WITH HER INFANT IN AN UNIAK AND REACHED THE ALASKAN SHORE BY PADDLING AS SHE WAS PROTECTED BY A WHITE WOLF. AFTER SHE WAS IN ALASKA SHE ABANDONED HER CHILD BECAUSE IT WAS ROBBED HER OF PEMICAN. SHE ASCENDED A BLAZING MOUNTAIN THINKING TO FIND A PARTY CAMPING ON THE SUMMIT. SHE FOLLOWED FLAMES AND SHE REACHED HER TRIBE. SHE MARKED HER TRAIL WITH STONES. WHEN SHE HAD MADE THE JOURNEY THE THIRD TIME, SHE SAT BESIDE BESIDE HER COPPER BED REFUSING TO GO HOME WITH THEM. SHE SUNK TO HER WAISTIN EACH. SHE SAID SHE WOULD TRADE HER METAL FOR MEAT. IF ANYONE GAVE HER BAD MEAT SHE WOULD GIVE THEM BRITTLE METAL. THOSE WHO CAME BACK LATER SAID SHE HAD DISAPPEARED IN THE BOWELS OF THE EARTH. HER TRIBE IS CALLED THE COPPER PEOPLE.

THESE INDIANS LIVE IN THE SOUTH EASTERNMOST PART OF THE NAHANE TRIBE. THEY SPEAK ATHAPASKAN. THEY HUNT BY THE DRAINAGE BASIN OF STIKINE RIVER AS WELL AS ISKUT RIVER. SOME OF THEM ARE IN ALASKA. AND B.C. IN THE EARLY DAYS THEY HAD PLENTY OF SALMON AND THE STIKINE TRIBE OF THE TLINGIT WERE FRIENDLY WITH TAHITAN.THEY EXCHANGED GOODS AND PRODUCTS. I HELPED MY MOM SHOP FOR FOODS WHEN WHEN I A YOUNG GIRL IN TROY. I ALSO MADE MY FAMILY MADE OUR FAMILY MEALS AFTER SCHOOL AS I HAD TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL. I ATE WHOLE FOODS AS A YOUNG GIRL AS MY PARENTS WERE NATURALLY INCLINED TO HEALTH FOODS WHICH WAS UNUSUAL FOR OHIO. I DID EAT A LOT OF CANDY WHEN YOUNG, BUT I DON'T CRAVE IT NOW. I HAVE GIVEN UP COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE.

SONOMA COUNTY HARVEST FAIR

LAST WEEKEND I WENT TO THE HARVEST FAIR WHEN IT WAS QUITE HOT. THEY HAD ALL KINDS OF ACTIVITIES INCLUDING A SCARECROW BUILDING CONTEST, PUMPKIN CARVING, CHEFS COOKING, VARIOUS APPLE TASTING, GIANT PUMPKIN WEIGH IN, PUMPKIN THROWING CONTEST, AN ART SHOW WITH LOCAL CRAFTS AND EXPERT PAINTERS, VARIOUS GRAPE STOMPERS, WEAVERS, BEE KEEPERS ASSOCIATION, A HALL OF FLOWERS WITH VARIOUS VENDORS, LIVESTOCK COMPETITIONS, SEVERAL TYPES OF BANDS, A LLAMA SHOW, SHEEP DOG TRIALS, A RIDE WITH STALLIONS PULLING A CARRIAGE, COW MILKING DEMOS, A COWGIRL WITH ROPE TRICKS, AND FLORA CULTURE EXHIBITS.

I EXPERIENCED ALL OF THESE ACTIVITIES DURING TWO DAYS AS I LIKE TO BE OUTDOORS WHEN IT IS NICE. IT WAS ESPECIALLY INTERESTING TO MEET THE COWGIRL WHO WAS CRACKING JOKES AS SHE HAD SMALL CHILDREN COME TO THE STAGE AND GIVE HER A HAND IN HOW SHE USED SEVERAL ROPES FOR ENTERTAINING US. THEN SHE SHOWED US HOW TO MAKE A LASSO THAT SHE JUMPED ACROSS AND THREW OVER HER BODY. SHE MADE MANY MOVEMENTS AS SHE CIRCLED THE LASSO AROUND HER IN A LARGE CIRCLE. SHE GAVE THE CHILD WHO HELPED HER A SMALL ROPE. I ENJOYED SEEING THE ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY ON DISPLAY IN THE KRAFT BUILDING. I MET SEVERAL WOMEN I KNEW HERE. THEY ALSO HAD A STROLLING BAND WHO PLAYED OLD WORLD MUSIC. I ENJOYED WATCHING THE THE LLAMA SHOW WHERE I MET ANOTHER MEDICINE LADY WHO HAD NAMED HER LLAMA A SHAMAN. THE VARIOUS LLAMA HAD BIG BEAUTIFUL EYES. I ASKED SEVERAL OWNERS WHAT THEY ATE AND THEY SAID THEIR STOMACHS ARE VERY EFFICIENT. THEY ONLY EAT ONE FLAKE OF HAY PER DAY! THEY HAD SOME FUN RACES WITH TWO OWNERS WITH THEIR LEGS TIED TOGETHER AS THEY CARRIED AN APPLE IN A LARGE SPOON. IT WAS JUST FOR FUN, SOME OF THE TIES CAME APART FROM THEIR LEGS AS THEY RACED!

I WATCHED YOUNG TODDLERS AND ADULTS THROW PUMPKINS FOR FUN. SOME OF THE STRONGER MEN TOSSED THEM 20 FEET! THE ART SHOW WAS JUDGED AND SOME OF THEM GOT VARIOUS RIBBONS. I WATCHED RABBITS AND GOATS GET JUDGED IN THE LIVESTOCK AREA. THEY ALSO HAD DRAFT AND SMALL PONIES AS WELL. AT THE PARK STAGE THEY HAD A NUMBER OF GOOD BANDS AD SINGERS. THE GRAPE STOMP I DID NOT REMEMBER FROM LAST YEAR, BUT IT WAS INTERESTING TO SEE PEOPLE FULL OG PURPLE GRAPE JUICE AS THEY WORKED HARD TO FILL UP A GALLON ON JUICE AS THEY STOMPED! SOME OF THEM GOT TEE SHIRTS. THE PUMPKIN TOSS WAS FOR PEOPLE WHO WANTED CHALLENGES WITH THEIR ARMS AND BACKS. SOME WOMEN THREW THEM UNDERHAND, WHILE SOME MEN THREW THEM OVER THEIR HEADS BACKWARDS AS WELL AS SIDEWAYS. MANY PUMPKINS BROKE OPEN. THE CHEF DEMONSTRATIONS WERE PRETTY DIFFERENT. ONE CHEF MADE UNCOOKED TUNA SUSHI WHICH I DID NOT LIKE. ANOTHER CHEF THE NEXT DAY MADE MOZZERELLA CHEES FROM HAND AND HADE SEVERAL FOLKS HELP FROM THE AUDIENCE. I LIKED THE DISH THEY SERVED WITH CUCUMBERS. AT THE HALL OF FLOWERS THEY HAD MANY VENDER WHERE I MET FOLKS FROM WESTERN FARMS WHO WERE INTERESTED IN MY HIKES. THE FIRST DAY I CARVED A PUMPKIN WITH MANY KIDS AND OF COURSE I PLACED IT OUTSIDE BUT SOMEONE WANTED IT. I GOT A GLIMPSE OF THE SHEEP DOG TRIALS WHERE ONE DOG THAT TRADITIONALLY COMES FROM SCOTLAND HERDS THE SHEEP INTO A CERTAIN AREA OR A LARGE SHEEP TRUCK. IT WAS INTERESTING TO SEE HOW CLEVER THEY ARE.

I HAD NEVER WATCHED THEM WEIGH PUMPKINS. THEY HAD TO USE A FORKLIFT TO BRING THESE HUGE PUMKINS TO A PLACE WHERE THEY WERE PLACED NEAR THE SCALE. THEN A CREW PLACED A CHAIN AND ROPE FIXTURE OVER THE THE PUMPKIN AND WEIGHED THEM LIFTING THEM ONTO A LARGE SCALE. THE LARGEST WEIGHED 1100 POUNDS! THE GROWER GOT $1000, BUT HE SAID THE SEED COST HIM THAT MUCH, SO I GUESS FOLKS JUDST DO THIS FOR FUN.
