LIBYA CULTURE

LIBYA IS AN ARAB COUNTRY IN NORTH AFRICA. THEY HAVE DEVELOPED A LITERARY TRADITION CENTERED ON ORAL POETRY.  THEY SUFFERED FROM ITALIAN PERIOD FOLKS.

IN 1970S A NEW GOVERNMENT WAS SET UP BY A SINGLE PUBLISHING HOUSE.  WRITERS WROTE IN SUPPORT OF AUTHORITIES. THOSE WHO REFUSED WERE IMPRISONED OR EMIGRATED.  CENSORSHIP LAWS WERE LOOSENED BY MANY BOOKS WERE CENSORED.

AFTER GADDAFIS GOVERNMENT WAS ABOLISHED LIBERTY OF PRESS  WAS INFLUENCED.  LIBYAS CUISINE DERIVES FROM MEDITERANEAN, NORTH AFRICAN AND MIDDLE EASTERN TRADITIONS.  ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR LIBYAN DISHES IS A SPICED SOUP - SHABA ARABIYA.  IT CONTAINS MEAT, TOMATOE, ONIONS CHILIS, CAYENNE, SAFFRON, CHICKPEAS, CILANTRA AND PARSLEY. 

BAZEEN IS A POPULAR DISH.  THEY MIX BARLEY FLOUR AND PLAIN FLOUR.  IT IS HARD DOUGH.  A SAUCE IS PLACED AROUND IT OF ONIONS LAMB , TURMERIC CAYENNE, FENUGEEK, PAPRIKA AND PASTE.  BOILED EGGS ARE PLACED AROUND THE DISH AND PICKLED CHILIS ARE ADDED.

MOST HIMILYANS EAT AT HOME.  IT IS UNUSUAL THAT ALL ALCOHOL IS BANNED HERE.  THE GOVERNMENT CONTROLS ALL THE MEDIA AND PEOPLE WATCH VIDEOS OR FOREIGN PROGRAMS.
